The PSAT

The Preliminary SAT / National Merit Scholarship Qualify Test (PSAT / NMSQT) is a two hour and ten minute exam administered to all high school students in the fall of their junior year. It not only serves as practice for the SAT, but it provides students the ability to qualify for a National Merit Scholarship. Students must sign up for this test at their high school or at another high school in their community. For more information see www.collegeboard.com and go to your school’s guidance office for the Official Student Guide to the PSAT/NMSQT. The PSAT/NMSQT is comprised of three major areas including critical reading, mathematics and writing.

Mathematics: The Mathematics area is tested in two 25-minute sections comprised of both multiple-choice problems and student produced response problems.

Writing: The writing area is tested in one 30-minute multiple-choice section testing grammar rules through sentence correction questions, error identification questions and paragraph improvement questions.
