The SAT
The SAT is the most widely used admissions test among colleges and universities. It is comprised of three major areas including critical reading, mathematics and writing, each of which are scored separately. It takes approximately 4 hours to complete the exam. The SAT is offered seven times each year in California (see www.collegeboard.com for test dates). Students taking the SAT should consider taking the ACT, as it is now commonly accepted by colleges and universities.
Critical Reading: The Critical Reading area is tested in three different sections, two 25-minute multiple-choice sections and one 20-minute multiple-choice section. They are comprised of both passage based reading questions and sentence completion questions.
Mathematics: The Mathematics area is tested in three different sections, two 25-minute sections and one 20-minute section. These sections may include multiple-choice problems and/or student produced response problems.
Writing: The Writing area is tested in three different sections, a 25-minute essay question and a 25-minute and a 10-minute multiple-choice section. There are three different question types testing grammar rules including identifying sentence errors, improving sentences, and improving paragraphs.
